Maple Road

History of Maple Road

Maple Road was originally designed in 1905 as a major urban parkway in the Park and Boulevard System Plan for Indianapolis by landscape architect George Kessler.

Though often overlooked, not only does the corridor contain historic architecture,it is a historic landscape itself. Modern roadway demands being what they are, Maple Road can not be completely restored as a historic landscape. However, it can be rejuvenated as a parkway connection between White River and Fall Creek by emphasizing the following aspects:
  • Promoting pedestrian traffic in addition to facilitating vehicular traffic
  • Promoting Maple Road Parkway as the center of civic activity for the neighborhoods by developing an identity that connects all communities
  • Balancing neighborhood environment, commercial activity and public spaces
  • Increasing safety for drivers and pedestrians
